This nationally accredited course is designed for staff working in education, care, sport, and community settings where individuals may be at risk of asthma. It provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognise asthma symptoms, respond appropriately during an asthma emergency, and implement effective management strategies in the workplace.

Delivered by experienced paramedics, this course equips you with hands-on training in how to administer reliever medication using an inhaler and spacer, follow a workplace asthma emergency plan, and respond to real-time scenarios with confidence and accuracy.

Course Outline

This nationally accredited course (22702VIC – Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace) is designed for individuals responsible for managing asthma risk or providing first aid in schools, workplaces, and community settings. Delivered by experienced paramedics, the course includes hands-on practice in the use of asthma medication devices and development of emergency action plans.

  1. Understanding Asthma

    Recognise asthma triggers, symptoms, and the difference between mild, moderate, and severe asthma attacks.

  2. Reliever Medication & Spacers

    Learn to safely administer reliever medication.

  3. Emergency Management Plans

    Follow a workplace Asthma Emergency Management Plan in a simulated emergency.

  4. Responding in Real-Time

    Act decisively in simulated asthma emergencies using scenario-based training with real-time feedback.

  5. Personal Asthma Action Plans

    Understand and support the use of individual asthma action plans in the workplace.

  6. Workplace Risk Management

    Identify high-risk environments and develop asthma prevention and response strategies.

  7. Communication & Documentation

    Accurately complete incident reports and communicate emergency responses with key personnel.

Up to 1 hour online + up to 1.5 hours face-to-face | $60pp

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil – all learners welcome, no prior experience required.

This course includes both theory and practical components. Guided by experienced paramedics, you’ll work through realistic workplace scenarios to build the knowledge and confidence to respond during an asthma emergency.
To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate correct use of an inhaler and spacer in a simulated emergency.
  • Accurately complete a Workplace Asthma Emergency Management Plan and related documentation

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. Industry best practice recommends refreshing your skills every 2 years, or more frequently if specified by your workplace or regulator.
