Emergencies don’t wait—this nationally accredited course teaches you how to respond quickly and effectively to a range of life-threatening medical situations—before help arrives.

HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support includes HLTAID009 – Provide CPR, giving you practical training in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic emergency life support in one course.

Delivered by experienced paramedics, this course is hands-on, and is focused on building confidence through real-world scenarios. Whether you're supporting your workplace, your family, or your community, you’ll leave with the knowledge and practical skills to take control when it counts.

Course Outline

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support) equips you with the skills to manage a broad range of medical emergencies. Delivered by experienced paramedics, the training is hands-on, practical, and focused on real-world scenarios.

  1. The DRSABCD action plan and responding to an emergency

    Learn how to quickly assess and respond to an emergency scene using the DRSABCD protocol — a proven approach for managing life-threatening situations safely and effectively.

  2. Managing Unconscious Casualties

    Understand how to position and monitor an unresponsive person to protect their airway and prevent further harm until help arrives.

  3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    Develop the skills to perform high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths on both adults and infants, in line with current ARC guidelines.

  4. Using a Defibrillator (AED)

    Gain confidence using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including when and how to apply it during a cardiac arrest.

  5. Apply Essential Infection Control Practices

    Follow safe hygiene procedures to protect yourself and others during first aid.

  6. Understand Key Legal Responsibilities as a First Aider

    Know your duty of care, consent requirements, and legal obligations in a first aid setting.

  7. Recognise and Respond to Medical Emergencies

    Identify and respond to critical health emergencies such as:


    • Stroke

    • Heart attack

    • Asthma 

    • Anaphylaxis

    • Diabetes

    • Seizures 

    • Drowning

    • Poisoning

    • Environmental exposure.

Blended: Up to 1 hour online + Up to 4 hours face-to-face.
Face-to-Face Only: Approximately 5 hours.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil – all learners welcome, no prior experience required

This course includes both a theory and practical component. You’ll learn by doing—working through engaging, real-world scenarios guided by qualified paramedics.

To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The HLTAID009 (CPR) component should be renewed every 12 months.
