Overview

This nationally accredited course is designed for educators, support staff, and carers working with infants, children, and young people in early learning, school, and care settings.  It prepares you to respond confidently to the most common first aid emergencies encountered in education environments.

HLTAID012 includes HLTAID011, HLTAID010, HLTAID009, 22578VIC and 22556VIC giving you complete coverage of CPR, basic emergency life support, and broader first aid —with targeted, accredited focus on asthma and anaphylaxis —all contextualised for the care of children.

Delivered by experienced paramedics, our training focuses on practical, hands-on learning. You’ll walk away feeling confident, capable, and ready to respond—whether you’re supporting a child with a minor injury or managing a complex emergency until help arrives.

Course Outline

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) is tailored for educators, childcare workers, and support staff. Delivered by experienced paramedics, the training covers first aid for children and infants, with a strong focus on real-world emergencies in early learning and school environments.

  1. The DRSABCD action plan and responding to an emergency

    Learn how to assess and manage emergency situations quickly using the DRSABCD protocol — tailored for childcare and education settings.

  2. Managing Unconscious Casualties (Adults, Children & Infants)

    Understand how to safely care for unresponsive individuals across all age groups, with a focus on infants and young children.

  3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Using a Defibrillator (AED)

    Develop the skills to perform high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths, and safely operate an AED during a cardiac emergency.

  4. Infection Control & Legal Responsibilities

    Follow safe hygiene practices and understand your obligations as a first aider in education and care environments.

  5. Recognise and Manage Common Medical Conditions & Injuries

    Identify and respond to a wide range of childhood emergencies including:

Anaphylaxis
    • Asthma
    • Bleeding
    • Choking
    • Burns
    • Seizures
    • Spinal injuries
    • Fractures
    • Heat stroke
    • Hypothermia
  6. First Aid Incident Reporting

    Learn how to accurately document incidents using basic verbal and written reporting procedures.

Blended: Up to 2 hours online + up to 6 hours face-to-face.
Face-to-Face Only: Up to 8 hours.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil – all learners welcome, no prior experience required.

This course includes both theory and practical components. Guided by experienced paramedics, you’ll work through realistic scenarios tailored to the education and care environment. To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The HLTAID009 (CPR) component should be renewed every 12 months.
