Overview

HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid builds on your foundational skills to prepare you for more complex, high-pressure medical and trauma-related emergencies.

HLTAID014 includes HLTAID011, HLTAID010 and HLTAID009, giving you complete coverage of CPR, emergency life support, and standard first aid—plus the added depth of advanced casualty management, triage, mental health support, and more.

Delivered by experienced paramedics, this course is grounded in real practice. You'll be supported through immersive, hands-on scenarios that build confidence and competence in responding to a broad range of emergencies, from cardiac arrest to childbirth.

Course Outline

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid) is designed for individuals who may be required to respond to complex or high-risk emergencies. Delivered by experienced paramedics, the training covers advanced first aid techniques, multiple casualty management, and extended care scenarios where professional help may be delayed.

  1. The DRSABCD Action Plan & Managing Unconscious Casualties

    Learn how to assess and manage high-pressure emergency situations using the DRSABCD approach, with a focus on complex or delayed-response situations.

  2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Using a Defibrillator (AED)

    Perform high-quality CPR and use an AED with confidence in both single and multiple casualty scenarios.

  3. Infection Control & Legal First Aid Protocols

    Apply safe hygiene practices and understand advanced legal and ethical responsibilities in higher-risk environments.

  4. Manage a Range of Injuries

    Respond to wounds, bleeding, fractures, dislocations, burns, and spinal injuries using advanced first aid techniques and practical, hands-on skills.

  5. Recognise, Assess & Respond to Medical Emergencies

    Support casualties experiencing:

    • Cardiac arrest

    • Stroke

    • Asthma

    • Anaphylaxis

    • Seizures

    • Diabetes

    • Poisoning

    • Environmental exposure
    • Mental health episodes
    • Substance-related issues
    • Shock
    • Drowning

    • Childbirth complications
  6. Conduct Advanced Casualty Assessments

    Learn how to gather a casualty history, perform secondary surveys, and measure vital signs including breathing rate, pulse, temperature, and level of consciousness.

  7. Control Major Haemorrhage

    Use haemostatic dressings and tourniquets to manage severe or life-threatening bleeding.

  8. Basic Casualty Triage

    Prioritise care in multi-casualty incidents using simple triage principles.

  9. First Aid Reporting

    Provide clear verbal handovers and complete written reports for handover to emergency services or medical staff.

  10. Psychological Impact of Trauma

    Understand how traumatic events affect both casualties and responders—and how to manage those effects calmly and professionally.

  11. Mental Health Recognition & Support for First Aiders

    Recognise early signs of mental fatigue or trauma in yourself or your team, and apply simple tools for self-care and mental wellbeing.

Blended: Up to 3 hours online + up to 8 hours face-to-face.
Face-to-Face Only: Up to 11 hours.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil – all learners welcome, no prior experience required.

This course includes both a theory and practical component. You’ll learn by doing—supported by experienced paramedics who guide you through complex scenarios step by step. To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The HLTAID009 (CPR) component should be renewed every 12 months.
